Google Business Profile categories: choose what fits your business
Choose a relevant primary category and justified additional categories, with a practical decision method for small businesses.

Choosing categories is often treated as a hunt for magic words. It deserves an honest description of what the business does. A joinery business does not become a general renovation company simply because it wants more building enquiries.
Start with your real jobs, your skills and what customers expect to buy when they contact you. Categories are a way to express that reality using the choices Google offers.
Understand primary and additional categories
Google recommends choosing the most specific suitable primary category available. You cannot create your own category. Additional categories should match your activity; you do not need one for every product or service. Changing categories can trigger a new verification request. Source: managing business categories.
Possible reverification is a practical reason to document the decision. It does not mean keeping an inaccurate category forever, but a change should address an identified situation.
Take stock before choosing
Look at your recent jobs or sales and group them into a few types. This is not an accounting exercise: a simple list is enough to see whether the displayed activity still matches your actual work.
- What does the business really do day to day?
- Which service do new customers usually ask for first?
- Which activities does your team provide regularly?
- Which requests do you hand over entirely to another business?
- Which available labels describe your activities without artificially expanding them?
If two similar labels seem suitable, write down what a customer would expect from each. The comparison often reveals which creates less confusion.
An example decision
Fictional example: a company mainly fits kitchens and occasionally creates fitted storage. It first looks at categories matching its main trade in Google's interface. It does not automatically choose 'architect' just because it prepares layout drawings.
The chosen category must be defensible from the real offer. Storage work can be described under services if that better represents its role in the business. This example illustrates a method; check the available category names in your own interface.
Look at competitors with care
Nearby profiles can help you identify vocabulary used in your sector. They are not proof of compliance or a template to copy. A competitor may offer different services, belong to another type of business or have an imperfect profile.
Avoid copying every choice. Instead, note the questions their categories raise, then decide based on your own services and actual positioning.
Keep a record and check after changing
Keep the previous category, the new one, the date and the reason for the change. After saving, check the profile's status and any requests from Google. Do not make multiple contradictory changes in the same session to try to measure an immediate effect.
In Optimaps, open your business, then Optimisation and General information. You can search Google's category catalogue for your country, choose your primary activity and adjust additional activities. The choice remains yours: review the correction before authorising submission. The follow-up distinguishes sending from confirmation by Google.
Then complete your service descriptions and check that your website describes the same activity. A category is not a shortcut to advertising work you do not provide.
